Top man Sony: next generation Xperia smartphones has a different design

The next generation of Xperia smartphones has a different design, according to a Sony CEO. The Japanese manufacturer has been sticking to the Omnibalance design for its high-end smartphones since the beginning of 2013, but will probably let it go.

In the interview with Indian Express, the CEO does not reveal much about the next generation of smartphones, because they have not yet been announced. He does say that the new line of products will appear ‘soon’, although it is not obvious that the manufacturer will present the new smartphones this year.

Sony has been using a design it calls Omnibalance since 2013. The Japanese manufacturer uses clean lines, without buttons or scanners on the front or back and without, for example, a camera that sticks out. In addition, many of the designs are glass on the front and back, with a metal frame in between. However, since 2013 there have been variations and details have been adjusted. For example, the corners have been given an element to absorb bumps and the metal round button on expensive models has been replaced by a fingerprint scanner.

Compared to the competition, it is striking that Sony uses large bezels around the screen, where many other high-end smartphones try to reduce the dimensions by reducing those bezels. There have been no rumors about the next generation of Xperias so far. Sony released its Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact this month.
