TomTom says it has developed an automated platform for creating its digital maps, allowing the company to make better and more efficient maps. 500 jobs within the Maps division have become redundant as a result and will be scrapped.

With the ‘advanced, automated mapmaking platform’ says TomTom integrate different digital sources to develop maps that contain newer, more information and have wider coverage. The company does not specify which additional resources are now being accessed, or how the automated platform works. TomTom says it can offer better products with the improved maps, both in the Automotive and Enterprise parts of the company.

The new platform also ensures that the company can work more efficiently. As a result, and thanks to the improved maps, TomTom now expects to be able to compete better with other map suppliers. This improved efficiency does mean that 500 jobs in the Maps division have become redundant and will be cut. That equates to ten percent of TomTom’s global workforce. The press release does not state whether there will be any redundancies.

TomTom uses its digital maps for its own navigation systems and apps, but also sells them to external companies. For example, the company has agreements with Mercedes, Volkswagen, Ford and Stellantis to provide mapping services that these vehicle manufacturers can integrate back into their own systems. Microsoft, Verizon and Uber are also mentioned as customers of the company.
