Telegram founder Pavel Durov has provided insight into what Telegram Premium will entail. The arrival of Telegram Premium had already been leaked, but there was hardly any official information. According to Durov, all existing features will remain free and Premium will arrive this month.

Telegram 8.4 (no Premium features to be seen)

In addition tells Durov that there are ‘more than enough free features on the way’. Telegram Premium will offer users more ‘features, speed and resources’. Also, Premium users will get certain new features first; so it’s about the features that will be available for free later on.

Durov does not elaborate much on the actual contents of the Premium package. However, it can be concluded from his Telegram message that “extra large documents and media” are included and that Premium users can post exclusive stickers and message responses. The latter presumably includes custom emojis.

Durov also says that users of the free form of Telegram will benefit from Telegram Premium users in certain ways. The latter group can send larger attachments, but anyone can receive them. An exact maximum is unknown. Users with a Premium response can also come to a post if a Premium user has already commented.

Pavel Durov is not giving a price for the additional features of the messaging app at this time. Telegram has already started monetizing its app in the form of advertisements on the so-called “one-to-many” channels. Durov now adds that he prefers Telegram’s revenues to come from Premium users and not from advertisers.

Telegram competes with apps like WhatsApp and Signal. A big difference between Telegram and the rest is that end-to-end encryption is not enabled by default with the app. Telegram does offer more functions, such as a download manager, spoiler function, profile videos and accounts that are not linked to phone numbers.

Update, Sunday: an earlier version of this article stated that a release date was not yet known. However, Durov reports in his post that Premium will be introduced this month. The article has been edited.
