Steam mistakenly gives users insight into other people’s data – update
Steam suffers from security vulnerabilities that allow users to see personal information of others. Many customers of the game service have indicated that, among other things, parts of credit card information are visible.
Reports have been received on social networks such as Twitter and Reddit from users having similar experiences with Steam. They seem to be able to see the account details of random users, including personal data such as payment details. According to The Verge, there are other things that don’t go quite right, such as showing the interface in the wrong language and spontaneously logging out.
The Steam store went offline for some time on Friday night, indicating that they’ve been working on fixing the issues. It is now possible to log in again, but at the time of writing it is not known whether the problems have been fully resolved.
It’s unclear why users see other people’s data, but it may be related to caching issues. Despite the account problems in the store, games purchased from Steam remain playable.
Update 9:57 am: Valve has confirmed that the issues have been resolved. Showing other people’s user data was indeed related to caching, according to the company.
