Spotify is discontinuing its live audio app Spotify Live. The company does not give a reason for this, but says that it no longer makes sense to have a separate app to show live music performances. Some of the functions are integrated into Spotify itself.

Spotify confirms the discontinuation to Music Ally. Spotify Live is a standalone app where artists could stream live performances. Other live events could also be organized such as radio shows or interviews with artists.

According to Spotify, there is no longer a good reason to offer such an app standalone. The company says it has experimented with live audio for a while and has learned a lot, but it doesn’t need to exist as a separate app. Spotify wants to integrate certain parts of the service into the Spotify app itself, but the company does not say what these are exactly. Spotify says there are “promising results” around what the company calls “listening parties” with artists. These are live streams where fans can chat with artists.

Spotify acquired the app in 2021. The app was then called Locker Room and was part of a start-up that Spotify took over. The app was initially intended for interaction between athletes and their fans, but later the app was renamed Greenroom and later Spotify Live for music artists. The app seemed like it could become a competitor for Clubhouse, but it was faced with fewer and fewer active users. The company does not say anything about the specific user numbers of Spotify Live.
