Sophos keeps its promise to publish the source code of the popular sandbox software Sandboxie. The company wants the tool to continue on its own as an open source project and expects to close the Sandboxie website in the fall. The forum closes on June 1.

Sophos claims to be in talks with users to hand over development of Sandboxie as an open source project. The source code is released under a GPL v3 license. The current version of Sandboxie is the last to be made available by Sophos and the company will no longer release updates. On June 1, the license server will shut down and Sophos has stopped performing license checks since version 5.31.1 of Sandboxie.

On June 1, the plug will also be removed from the forum. The software’s website will remain online for the time being, but Sophos will be stripping it in phases and expects to completely shut down the website in the fall, after which Sandboxie should continue as an independent open source project. In September of last year, Sophos made the software freeware and then the company announced its intention that Sandboxie should continue as an open source application.
