Sony has started distributing the Android 12 upgrade for the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III phones. This upgrade will include an improved screenshot function. As far as we know, only Russian users have already been able to install the upgrade.

The manufacturer has put an information page about the Android 12 upgrade online, in which the new functions are discussed. In the article, Sony does not yet indicate which phones will receive the update. According to XDA Developers, the Xperia 1 III and 5 III will get the update first, specifically the XQ-BC72 and XQ-BQ72 models. These would be Asian dual SIM devices, with Russian users being the first to install the upgrade. It is not yet clear when other users will receive the upgrade, and whether other devices can also be upgraded.

Android 12 features that users can expect according to Sony are, for example, the ‘rolling screenshot’ function where the phone can automatically scroll to take a longer screenshot. There’s also an improved mode for one-handed operation, an Extra Dim mode that reduces the brightness further than was previously possible, and the phone gets an indicator for when the microphone or camera is being used.

Sony announced both phones last April. The smartphones have a 120Hz screen, although the Xperia 5 III with a 6.1 “screen is slightly more compact than the 1 III model, with a 6.5” OLED screen.
