Sony is starting to release its Android 4.4 updates for recent Xperia Z devices. The Xperia Z1 Compact, Z1 and Z Ultra are the first to go, the Xperia Z will follow later. Strangely enough, the Xperia SP is missing from the list of devices that will receive an update.

The update includes not only Android 4.4, but also several other changes. For example, the panel with toggles has been changed and users can choose which toggles appear in it. There is also support for Xperia Themes, which allows users to install hundreds of themes. There is also more integration with Sony’s own cloud services.

The updates for the Xperia Z1 Compact, Z1, and Z Ultra start this week, but it may take weeks for updates to be available in a particular country or carrier. Sony will start the update for the Xperia Z together with the Xperia ZL and Tablet Z in the spring.

Sony previously said that the mid-range phone Xperia SP would also receive an update, but that has suddenly disappeared from the list that Sony is now giving. It is unknown whether that update will come and Sony will announce it at a later time or whether the updates will not come.
