Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the past quarter, meaning a total of 41.7 million units have now been sold. The number of PlayStation 5 consoles sold increased by almost 38 percent compared to the same period last year.

This is evident from the most recent Sony’s quarterly results. Total gaming hardware revenue increased by almost 42 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2023, while games and software revenue increased by more than 27 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Revenue from PS Plus subscribers also rose significantly, but for unknown reasons Sony does not specify exactly how many subscribers the service has. During the 2022 financial year, the number of customers with a PS Plus subscription fluctuated between 45.4 and 47.4 million. This number has probably increased slightly.

In total, the Japanese company’s gaming division earned roughly 4.9 billion euros, which is again a significant increase compared to the same quarter last year. This is partly due to higher PlayStation 5 sales, as well as higher turnover from third-party games. Revenue from first-party games, games from developers that fall under PlayStation Studios, remained the same.

In total, Sony earned almost 18.8 billion euros in the past quarter, an increase of almost a third compared to the same quarter last year. Nevertheless, operating income fell by more than thirty percent to approximately 1.6 billion euros. This is partly due to the Financial Services department, where turnover was more than three times as high, but operational income fell by more than 60 percent for unknown reasons.
