Sony has announced the Xperia 5 V. The compact Android smartphone has one less camera than its predecessor; the camera with 60mm telephoto lens has disappeared. Instead, users can crop to the primary camera’s sensor.

The Xperia 5 V still has a 12-megapixel camera with an ultra-wide-angle lens with a 16mm lens and a sensor of approximately 20 square millimeters. The primary camera has a 52-megapixel sensor, of which Sony uses 48 megapixels effectively. It is a sensor of approximately 70 square millimeters. Because Sony uses 48 megapixels, there is a mode to crop 2x for the effect of a 12-megapixel sensor at 48mm. That should replace the telephoto lens.

It’s an Exmor T sensor. The sensors differ from current models because the transistors and photodiodes have been separated from each other for the first time in the pixel layer. This makes more surface area available for the photodiodes, meaning that a pixel with the same surface area can capture more light. In the new design, the transistors are located behind the diodes.

The housing with IP65/IP68 certificate is 154x68mm in size and 8.6mm thick. This makes it relatively small compared to other Android smartphones. Sony equips the phone with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The battery has a capacity of 5000mAh and can be charged at 30W via the USB-C port. It also has a 3.5mm jack. According to Sony, about 7 percent of the time Xperia users spend listening to audio is through a 3.5mm jack.

In terms of software, Sony adds a Video Editor, which automatically converts selected videos into a produced video with transitions, which can then be exported and shared. That app is also coming to the Xperia 1 V. In addition, the portrait mode should look better. Sony promises two OS upgrades and three years of security updates. That is below average in this price range. Many competitors offer four or five years of security updates. The Xperia 5 V will be released later this month and will cost 999 euros in the Benelux.
