Sony has announced a professional video camera capable of shooting 4k videos at up to 480fps. This makes slow-motion recordings possible up to 8x in UHD resolution. The camera is intended for capturing sporting events.

The new uhfr camera system consists of the HDC-4800, a film camera with a super35mm sensor. That sensor size is comparable to the sensor in APS-C DSLRs. According to Sony, it is a new cmos chip, but exact specifications have not yet been announced. The camera films in 4k resolution with a maximum of 480fps. That allows for a delay of eight times at a playback speed of 60fps. In the full-HD resolution, the delay is up to sixteen times.

The camera has a PL lens mount and can also be used in combination with B4 lenses with the aid of an adapter. Then the resolution is limited to full-HD, because these lenses have a smaller image circle.

The video camera works together with the BPU-4800 baseband processor. The recordings are stored on this server. There is room for four hours of 4k slow motion recordings according to Sony. It is also possible to play and broadcast the images directly from this server. The camera system will probably be used to record major sporting events. Sony says the system has already been tested during the Super Bowl 50.

Along with the professional camera for high frame rates, Sony introduces the PXW-Z450, a professional camcorder with a smaller 2/3″ sensor. This model films in the UHD resolution of 3840×2160 pixels at up to 60fps and uses the B4 lens mount The camera is the successor to the PXW-X400, which films in 1080p resolution, and owners of that model can purchase an upgrade kit and have it installed to get the same capabilities as the new model.
