Sony announced its new TV lineup in the Bravia series at CES. The company comes with the ZG9 LCDs with 8k resolution and the AG9 TVs with OLED panels and 4k resolution. Both have Imax Enhanced certification.

Sony categorizes the two new TVs under the Masters series, with which it tries to offer the image quality as the makers of films and series intended. The Imax Enhanced certification must ensure this, among other things. Imax announced this certification program last year. Devices qualify if they properly display 4k HDR playback of Imax Enhanced video, according to Imax. With these videos, Imax applied post-production techniques that would provide a more faithful image. According to Sony, a streaming service from Rakuten will be available in the Benelux this year, with Imax Enhanced videos, including Sony’s own film Venom.

The new Sony Bravias also support Netflix Calibrated Mode, an option to automatically adjust colors and dynamic contrast for Netflix viewing. Some TVs from last year already had this mode. The ZG9 and AG9 include the Picture Processor X1 Ultimate soc and run Android TV, with the Google Assistant for voice control via integrated microphones.

The ZG9 series consists of 85″ and 98″ models with full array local dimming backlight for HDR. They are Sony’s first 8k HDR TVs. The TV’s soc allows upscaling of videos to the 8k resolution. The processor works in tandem with the 8K X-Reality PRO image engine to scale up, taking advantage of an 8k image database. Sony does not give many details about this yet. The ZG9 has two speakers in the top of the screen edge and two in the bottom. Support for Dolby Atmos is not standard, but this will come at a later time via a software update.
