Software Update: Ubuntu 9.10

The developers of Ubuntu Linux released Ubuntu Linux 9.10 a few days ago which we discussed earlier in this review. This branch of the Linux distribution has been codenamed ‘Karmic Koala’ and at the same time the other members of the Ubuntu family have also been updated, such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Ubuntu Studio. Version 9.10 includes Gnome 2.28 and Linux kernel 2.6.31-14.48. The announcement on the mailing list looks like this:

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop and Server editions, Ubuntu 9.10 Server for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon’s EC2, and Ubuntu Netbook Remix, continuing Ubuntu’s tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality , easy to use Linux distribution.

Ubuntu 9.10 will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers. Users requiring a longer support lifetime on the server may choose to continue using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, with security support until 2013, rather than upgrading to 9.10.

Ubuntu 9.10 for ARM architectures

Ubuntu 9.10 is available for the ARM architecture. Users should only download these images if they have access to ARM chipsets or devices, as they will not run on Intel-based machines.
