PC-BSD is an operating system that uses FreeBSD’s open source code. It comes with KDE by default and the installation procedure is done graphically. In addition, the PBI system is included, which should make installing applications easier. The developers released version 8.1 a while ago. This release includes KDE 4.4.5, Xorg 7.5, Nvidia Driver 256.35, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1, Opera 10.10 and Firefox 3.6.4. The corresponding announcement looks like this:

PC BSD 8.1 Released

The PC-BSD Team is pleased to announce the availability of PC-BSD 8.1 (Hubble Edition), running FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE, and KDE 4.4.5 Version 8.1 contains a number of enhancements and improvements. For a full list of changes, please refer to the changelog. Some of the notable changes are:

  • FreeBSD 8.1 Release

  • Numerous fixes to the installation backend
  • Support for creating dedicated disk GPT partitioning
  • Improved ZFS support
