Software Update: Norton Antivirus 2001 Beta 1

At Symantec they are working on the successor to the widely used program Norton Antivirus 2000. The first beta version is now out and ready for download. Among the new features is the possibility of auto-updates as soon as you are online and an improved scanning technique. Windows 2K support and mail scanning are not new, I already happily scan my mail automatically in Win2K via NAV 2000:

  • You’re always up to date. Virus definitions are now updated each time a customer is online and new definitions are available.
  • Intelligent technology that improves file scanning performance and reduces system impact from constant background monitoring for viruses.
  • Comprehensive email scanning protection.
  • Supports Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium platforms[break]However, I will be careful when installing the program, because with BetaNews someone wrote a not so positive response:[/break]Don’t install if you have a registered version of Norton AntiVirus, it installs as a 30day version and over-writes your current version. Very hard to delete/uninstall and also updates Live Up-date to version 6 and say all products a up to date even after you uninstall this beta and reinstall your older version of Norton AntiVirus that doesn’t have any newer virus updates.
