Spread the love

A few days ago, NewsLeecher finally released the long-awaited final version of 2.0 of the program of the same name that can be used to read messages via Usenet and download binaries. However, the developers have not rested on their laurels, as the first beta release of version 2.1 has already been released. In this version, which is only for registered users, the memory usage has been examined in particular, which makes the application faster and more stable. The full release notes look like this:

Release notes for 2.1 beta 1

  • This version of NewsLeecher uses a new group cache format. This means that your previously downloaded group headers an’t be used with this version. Your old headers are still kept on your computer so you, at any time, can install an older version of NewsLeecher and keep using the headers.
  • The biggest memory eater in NewsLeecher has now been eliminated! In NewsLeecher versions prior to 2.1, it would, in extreme cases, require up of 500MB RAM for NewsLeecher to do a cache-cleanup for large groups with lots of retention. This version of NewsLeecher introduces a new cache cleanup function that doesn’t require *any* RAM at all to do the cleaning. Besides that, it is also much faster than the old clean up function.
  • NewsLeecher uses a new memory manager which makes the application a bit faster and a bit more stable.
  • Optimized the load/save cache functions a bit. They are a little faster now.
  • All queue-move functions are now directly accessible from the ‘Download Queue’ toolbar.
  • Other minor improvements.
