Spread the love

MepisLite is the lighter sister of SimplyMepis which is based on the Linux distribution Debian. MepisLite is specially offered for the somewhat older machines so that they are not plagued by slow performance. Applications included by default include KDE 3.3.2, KOffice, Konqueror, GIMP, Skype, Gaim, and Acrobat Reader 7.0. Recently version 3.3.1-2.test02 of MepisLite is available with the following announcement:

MEPISLite 3.3.1-2.test02 is available for public testing via the MEPIS Subscriber’s Site and public mirrors. Look in the “testing” subdirectory. For up to 30 days, please send feedback to [email protected]

Now MEPISLite is pinned to the Debian “testing” pool. “Bleeding edge” users and developers should continue to use SimplyMEPIS. Corporate users should contact [email protected] for information about upcoming DCCA compliant versions of MEPIS.

MEPISLite is a lighter-weight Linux for home users new to Linux. It is similar to SimplyMEPIS, except that some packages have been changed to improve performance. Most notably, OpenOffice has been replaced with KOffice. The Firefox browser is included but Konqueror is recommended. MEPISLite does not have builtin support for AES encryption. This release was synchronized to the Debian testing pool on August 1, 2005.

This version of MEPISLite includes MEPIS’ new Desktop OnTheGo application. Desktop OnTheGo is a completely redesigned successor to the MEPIS Traveler Disc. With Desktop OnTheGo, you can take your desktop everywhere a compatible version of Linux is available, including running from CD. The MEPISLite version of Desktop OnTheGo does not support AES encryption. Desktop OnTheGo is scheduled to be available soon in products from Technalign, SimpleICT, and Forensic Computers.
