Software Update: Mandrake Multi Network Firewall beta 1

The first beta version of the firewall has been released on the Mandrake homepage Multi Network Firewall† This release is here down and weighs 382 megabytes. Multi Network Firewall uses Linux to turn a PC into a firewall, VPN server and traffic manager. In addition to support for multiple networks, the software also has support for VPN built in as standard, which offers the possibility to set up different secure networks. In addition, several Multi DMZ (de-militarized zone) configurations can be built behind MNF, with which parts of the internal network can be made transparent to the outside world. Beta 1 of Mandrake Multi Network Firewall features, among other things, the use of Linux kernel 2.6 and static routes:

    Here are some new features compared to the former MNF version:

    VPN:

    • pptp (not yet fully operational)
    • openvpn (not yet fully operational)
    • strongswan/openswan replaces the no longer maintained freeswan
    • traffic shaping (the wonder shaper script)
    • ecn support
    • netmap
    • kazaa filtering (ftwall project)
    • the dhcp and proxy servers now support several networks (not yet fully operational)
    • bridging (not yet fully operational)
    • bonding (not yet fully operational)
    • mandrakeonline support for updates (not yet fully operational)

    Web interface new facilities:

    • the iptables rules have now two more columns: description (so one can add a short description to an iptable rule) and status (one can now enable/disable an iptable rule without deleting it)
    • javascript input check (in order to make sure that an IP address is valid. One can no longer enter a text in an IP box)
