Software Update: Mandrake 8.1

flat© and slierp were the first to report that Mandrake 8.1 is final. The site is down at the time of writing, but thanks to the other submitters, more information is available. Besides Kernel 2.4.8 (+ later patches), KDE 2.2.1 and Gnome 1.4.1, there are also many innovations in Mandrake progs. Novice users are helped along with MandrakeFirstTime and server tasks are easier to configure with wizards.

Mandrake Linux 8.1 also includes “server configuration wizards”, aimed at simplifying configuration of various servers. Wizardy is also at work in the Mandrake Control Center, eg new “server wizards” integrate in the Software Manager. Of course, using these wizards is entirely optional *grin*
