Software Update: ExifTool 12.46

Phil Harvey has released version 12.46 of ExifTool. ExifTool is a free and cross-platform program that allows the metadata of a large number of files can be managed and edited. It works from the command line, but third-party solutions are available that allow it to be used with a graphical user interface as well. New versions appear regularly, but most releases are made available under the beta flag. This update is also referred to as a development version; the latest stable release is version 12.42. The following changes and improvements have been made in this release:

• Patched to test QuickTime UserData tags with default 0x0000 language code to see if they contain UTF8 characters, and if so assume UTF8 encoding and ignore the CharsetQuickTime setting
• Patched to avoid potential deep recursion when reading/writing malicious CRW images
• Fixed “Invalid ID3 frame size” problem when reading ID3v2 with an extended header (very uncommon, but Audacity uses this)
• Fixed typo in the name of a new DNG 1.6 tag
• Fixed some verbose warnings when reading Nikon Z camera NEF files
• Fixed decoding of a couple of Nikon Z9 tags for newer firmware versions (thanks Warren Hatch)
