TheTeraarist wrote first that a new DivX codec has finally appeared. The 4.0 Codec has been completely rewritten and is apparently faster and more visually appealing. Movie encoding should be almost four times faster than with the previous version and decoding also requires fewer CPU cycles.

Currently, DivX.com’s server seems too heavily loaded to be useful, but otherwise you’d here be able to download the new codec including player and here the separate codec. Below the important info about the new codec:

So what’s new in DivX 4.0 (Beta)? Well, it’s completely re-written to improve performance and visual quality. The code base is different from all earlier versions, including the open-source OpenDivX codec. Some new features:

  • Improved decoder performance
  • Higher encoding performance, almost 4 times faster than previous version
  • Multipass encoding and 2 different variable bit rate modes
  • Improved visual quality
  • Highly scalable codec from 16×16 pixels to 1920×1280 pixels (ie HDTV).
  • All even integer dimensions are acceptable.
  • Support for popular encoding/editing applications
  • Plays all DivXTM content
