Software Update: c’t Offline Update 6.0

The German computer magazine c’t released a new version of its Offline Update tool last Wednesday. With this program it is possible to provide computers with Windows 2000 or higher that do not have an internet connection with the latest updates from Microsoft. In a clear interface you can choose from one or more languages ​​for the aforementioned Windows versions and the program then retrieves all updates from the ftp server of Microsoft. Optionally, an ISO file can be made of the whole per language or per operating system on a CD or all together on a DVD. Installation hint:

  • In spite of the different directory name inside the archive, you still may unpack v. 6.0 into an existing structure, overwriting existing files

  • Download scripts for Linux
  • USB stick option added to UpdateGenerator script
  • Service Packs 2 for Office 2007 and Office Compatibility Pack integrated
  • Optional installation of Windows PowerShell 1.0 on Windows XP, Server 2003 and Vista (x86/x64) systems

Fixed:

  • Internet Explorer 8 wasn’t installed on automatic recall runs
  • Office 2000 Service Pack level was not properly detected
  • Office 2000 Service Release 1a (O2KSR1aDL.EXE) would not be installed
  • DownloadUpdates.cmd echoed and logged credentials for proxy access
  • Displayed number of statically defined updates to be downloaded was incorrect
  • (defect #70): WSUS download errors caused re-downloading of existing updates
  • Sleep.vbs was not found on SafeRmDir.cmd calls in DownloadUpdates.cmd
