Snap is reportedly working on a dark mode for its Snapchat app. At least on Android, the option to make the app dark may become part of the paid Snapchat+ subscription, a developer claims based on code in the app.

Paying users get the option to monitor the system in light and dark mode or always show the app in dark mode, says developer Alessandro Paluzzi based on code in the Snapchat app. Snap has not confirmed the information.

Paluzzi first published about the upcoming dark mode for the app over two years ago. It still isn’t there, but Snap is still working on it, according to Paluzzi. It is unknown if and when dark mode will come. It could be a feature that remains part of the subscription, but Snap can also choose to test the feature with paying users. That happens with some functions.

The developer studies the source code of new versions of social media apps in search of new features. For example, he discovered a few months ago that Instagram was getting a paid verification option. Meta announced that a few weeks later.

Update, Monday: Snap also sometimes tests functions with paying users in order to make them available to free users later. That option has been added to the article. Thanks CH4OS!
