Plex’s site and forum has been hacked. The service advises users in an email to change the password. The hacker wants to see money, otherwise he threatens to make the data of users of Plex public.

The hacker, who calls himself savaka, wants 9.5 bitcoins, currently converted around 2200 euros. If he does not have that money on Friday, the ransom will go up by 5 bitcoins, he said on the forum. He says he has both customer data and Plex software in his hands. If Plex doesn’t pay, it distributes the data it has via torrents.

Plex has now informed users that the hacker indeed has IP addresses, private messages and passwords of forum accounts. The passwords have been hashed and salted, Plex said. Users must create a new password and will not be able to access the forum again until they have a new password. Payment data was not on the servers, Plex says. Plex is a media server to stream local content to various devices.
