The Marshmallow version of Android, released in October 2015, is installed on 10.1 percent of all Android devices, Google reports on its statistics page. In March this percentage was still at 2.3 percent.

The statistics also show that the share of all Android versions lower than 5.1 is slowly decreasing. Lollipop, consisting of versions 5.0 and 5.1, accounts for a total of 35.4 percent, making it the most installed version. Version 4.4, or KitKat, is in second place with 31.6 percent. This version was overtaken by Lollipop in March.

Jellybean, which includes versions 4.1 through 4.3, still has an 18.9 percent share. Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread and Froyo individually have no more than 2 percent share and are therefore strongly in the minority.

Google recently released the third preview of the latest version of the operating system, now known only as Android N, online. In that version, Google changed the way it installs updates to the operating system; these are executed in the background. Google also asked users to come up with a name for Android N.
