Separate PlayStation 5 disk drive can be interchanged
The separate disk drive of the new PlayStation 5 appears to be interchangeable. This is evident from a video by YouTuber Mystic. He tried an already registered disk drive in another PlayStation 5 and experienced no problems.
Mystic compared the slim PlayStation 5 to the original version and discussed the changes to the console. The youtuber took also examined the separate disk drive and confirmed that it must be registered online with Sony before it can be used.
The YouTuber also tried out some scenarios. He performed a factory reset without an active internet connection and got a warning. It stated that the disk drive could not be unregistered. Mystic believes this is because there was no active internet connection, but proceeded with the reset anyway. After the factory reset, the YouTuber was able to re-register the separate drive via Sony’s servers.
The YouTuber also checked whether the individual drives are interchangeable. He installed an already registered disk drive in a new PS5 that was already linked to another disk drive and was also able to register this ‘new’ drive with Sony without any problems. According to Mystic, the ‘old’ registration of the disk drive is then simply overwritten.
Sony announced a new, thinner version of the PlayStation 5 in October. In addition to the removable disk drive, the console will have a new design and a larger 1TB SSD. The console will be available in the United States in November. A release in other countries will follow in the following months. The PS5 Digital Edition will cost 450 euros, or 550 euros for a variant that comes with a disk drive. Digital Edition users can also purchase the disk drive separately later for 120 euros.
