Samsung: we haven’t sold a million Galaxy Fold copies after all

A Samsung spokesperson told Korean media that the company has not sold a million Galaxy Fold devices, but fewer than that. The president’s statements about this are said to be based on a misunderstanding.

On Thursday, Samsung Electronics chairman Young Sohn made a statement that was interpreted by media worldwide as if the company had sold a million units of the Galaxy Fold: “The point is, we sell a million of these products. There are a million people. who want to use this product for $2,000.” A Samsung spokesperson told Yonhap news agency, among others, that the chairman may have confused the sales number with the initial expectation about sales numbers, because the actual number of Folds sold is less than a million.

The spokesperson did not disclose how many the company has sold or delivered. Earlier this year, according to Yonhap, Samsung announced that the company expects to sell half a million Fold copies worldwide this year. That expectation is therefore considerably lower than the initial expectation of one million. Samsung probably lowered its expectations after delaying the release from April to September because the Fold initially had several flaws.
