Samsung is working on better dust protection for future foldables
Samsung says it is working on the dust-resistant properties of its foldable smartphones. To date, Samsung’s Fold and Flip phones have at most an IPX8 certification, which makes them quite resistant to water, but not dust.
Samsung also took three generations to make the Fold and Flip somewhat waterproof: in the third generation, they received the IPX8 certification, which means the phone can withstand total submersion up to a certain amount of pressure. The X stands for ‘not tested against dust’. With this promise and argument comes Samsung leader TM Roh opposite the South Korean BizWatch. He also states that “it’s a work in progress” and asks users to “wait a little longer.”
The Verge notes that competitor Motorola does have dust-resistant models on the market with its Razr foldables. An example from the Pricewatch: the Razr 40 Ultra has an IP52 certification and is therefore much more resistant to dust, but less resistant to liquids. For further comparison: ‘normal’ smartphones often have an IP68 certification, and are therefore quite resistant to both dust and liquids.
By the way, the famous YouTuber JerryRigEverything did it are standard tests on the Galaxy Fold4 and concluded that the device could withstand dust very well. However, in his video he doesn’t completely wipe the device clean after the dust test, making it impossible for the viewer to see if some of that dust has gotten under the screen.
This Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 has an IPX8 certification.
