At IFA, Samsung announced SleepSense, one of the first products the company has created for its home automation platform SmartThings. Other parts of that platform have now been made smaller and run faster.

SleepSense is a flat sensor that a user has to place under their mattress. The sensor connects to the app on a smartphone and provides an overview of the sleeping behavior in the morning. That overview is based on movements in bed, breathing and heart rhythm of the user. The SleepSense sensor gives a score and tips, which can help the user to sleep better.

SleepSense works together with other devices in the house via Samsung’s home automation platform SmartThings. For example, the connection to the alarm clock, lighting, air conditioning and TV can ensure that the user’s sleep score is higher. Samsung mentions as an example that the TV is turned off as soon as the user falls asleep.

At the same time, Samsung announced an update to its SmartThings line of home automation products. The Korean company acquired SmartThings last year after an acquisition. Samsung has now equipped the central SmartThings Hub with a more powerful processor and a battery backup that should enable 10 hours of autonomous operation. In addition, several sensors have been provided with a thinner appearance and the interface of the app has been updated.

Samsung will immediately release products from its SmartThings platform in the US and the UK will follow next week. It is not known when it will be the turn of the rest of Europe.
