Rumor: EA Considers Making Battlefield 2042 Part Free-to-Play

Electronic Arts may be considering making some of Battlefield 2042 free-to-play. That reports Tom Henderson, a journalist who regularly shares information about the Battlefield franchise. It may be Portal or Hazard Zone mode.

Henderson reports on Twitter that EA is “very disappointed” with how Battlefield 2042 has performed. The company would consider “all options” for the title, including exploring free-to-play options for the game. In a YouTube video, the insider reports that EA is potentially going to make a part of Battlefield 2042 playable for free.

Although it is not yet concretely known which game mode that would be, the publisher would look at a part of Hazard Zone or Battlefield Portal. The latter is more likely, according to Henderson, because that mode attracts more players. The full game would remain paid. EA presents its quarterly results on February 1; the company may then provide more details about its future plans for Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield 2042 was released on November 19 for consoles and PCs. The shooter was received negatively by gamers upon release, among other things because of bugs, the class system, gunplay and other aspects of gameplay. Developer DICE has indicated that it wants to address various aspects of the game in response to the criticism. The company recently gave an update about this, in which it shares some update plans for the next few months, among other things.
