Roku Acquires Audio Technology Company

Roku, maker of media players, has acquired the company Dynastrom. This company makes technology for audio, mainly focusing on the so-called ‘multi-room audio’ concept, which Sonos has become known for.

Roku and Dynastrom have tried to keep the acquisition quiet, but Variety discovered the acquisition in financial documents sent to US authorities. An amount of slightly more than 3 million dollars is mentioned for the acquisition of the Danish Dynastrom. A Roku spokesperson has now confirmed the acquisition.

This seems to be a so-called ‘acqui-hire’, in which it is mainly about the people who work for the company. LinkedIn pages show that Dynastrom’s CEO and CTO, among others, have been working for Roku since September, and it’s likely they’re further developing Sonos-like technology there.

Dynastrom is a small start-up that in recent years has mainly focused on developing technology to play audio on different speakers in different rooms in the house. It therefore seems plausible that Roku, in addition to releasing media players, also wants to do something with smart audio systems.
