Developer Psyonix has announced that the Rocket League game has 40 million registered players. The number of active players may be a bit lower, because guest accounts and players with more than one account are included.

Psyonix made the number of 40 million registered players known on Twitter. Two weeks ago, this number was still more than 38 million players worldwide, while the number of players in April was still at 30 million. By the end of December, a total of more than 2 billion games had been played since its release in 2015.

The number of players will probably continue to rise, partly because Rocket League has also been available on the Nintendo Switch since November. The game was released in July 2015 for the PlayStation 4 and PC. In February 2016, the game was also released for the Xbox One. Rocket League has also been a big game in the esports sector for a while now.

Rocket League is basically a soccer game where the players use rocket-powered cars instead of soccer players to get a large metal ball into the opponent’s goal. Basketball and ice hockey are also among the sports that can be played in the game.
