Ring doorbells with a battery gain support for end-to-end encryption

Ring makes end-to-end encryption available for its doorbells. Images recorded with the doorbell may soon be encrypted. This should ensure that no one else can access the video footage of Ring users except themselves.

Ring announces end-to-end encryption on for all its battery-operated doorbells. The functionality was already available for mains powered Ring doorbells and security cameras. These devices already received end-to-end encryption in 2021.

When end-to-end encryption is activated, only the owner of the doorbell can still access the images via their smartphone. Users must first enable this. Ring still stores the video images on its own servers, but because of the encryption, employees at Ring or, for example, the authorities can no longer access the images without the user’s permission.

When end-to-end encryption is on, there are some restrictions on viewing the images. For example, users can only view the images on smartphones or tablets if they are linked. Seeing images via the Ring website is then not possible. Also, ‘shared users’ can no longer view the images. Ring’s support page has a complete list with the restrictions.
