Reddit adds anonymous browsing feature to official app

Reddit is adding an anonymous browsing mode to its Android app. This makes it possible to keep visited subreddits, searches and browsing history separate from a user’s profile. Reddit can’t link that information itself either.

The new mode is added to the official Reddit app and is an improvement of the existing incognito browser. Third party apps, which are widely used by Reddit users, are not covered. Anonymous Browsing allows users to start a session that allows them to visit the social network anonymously. The websites and subreddits visited in the app and searches that a user makes are not associated with the Reddit account the user is logged in with.

Users will also no longer be able to post or vote on posts at the same time. It is also no longer possible to save messages.

Creating an anonymous session creates a unique identifier that cannot be associated with the user’s Reddit account. Also, the ID is not stored in the app itself. According to a Reddit developer, the social network itself can no longer see which sites a user has visited.

The feature is rolling out to Android users. The feature will only follow in one to two months in the iOS app.
