Sony has refunded gamers who pre-ordered the PlayStation 4 version of Overkill’s The Walking Dead, because the game was said to have been canceled. Publisher 505 Games denies that and says that the game is still being worked on.

A buyer of the game posted the message he received from the PlayStation Store on Reddit. It states that the publisher of Overkill’s The Walking Dead has told Sony that the game has been canceled. People who pre-ordered the game will therefore get their money back.

Publisher 505 Games denies that in a message on Twitter. According to the publisher, the console version has only been delayed and will be released at a later time. Developer Starbreeze has not yet responded. In January, the release of the console version was postponed to an unknown date.

The co-op zombie game came out for PC last November and didn’t bring the desired success. The game has a Metascore of 51; the user reviews on Steam are divided. The game has been delayed several times in the past and was initially expected to be released in 2016. Along with the PC version, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions should also have been released. Last summer it was announced that the console versions would only be released in February. In January, Starbreeze said it wouldn’t be able to release the game on that date, without specifying a new date.

Developer Starbreeze is in financial trouble due to the disappointing revenues of the zombie game. On Thursday, the Swedish company announced that it would ask the Stockholm court for more time for the restructuring it is working on. Recently, the developer sold the System Shock 3 publishing rights back to the original developer to raise money.

At the end of January, Eurogamer wrote an extensive article about the ‘fall’ of Starbreeze and the perils surrounding the development of Overkill’s The Walking Dead. The game is based on the comic book series that formed the basis for the hit TV series The Walking Dead. Overkill Software, a Starbreeze studio, produces the game.
