Proton has acquired SimpleLogin. SimpleLogin lets users create email aliases. Proton will continue to integrate the SimpleLogin service into ProtonMail and say SimpleLogin will continue to work with other mail clients.

SimpleLogin is complementary to ProtonMail, according to Proton, the developer of the privacy-focused mail service. “ProtonMail protects your privacy with encryption, while SimpleLogin prevents malicious parties from misusing your real email address.” In the coming months, Proton will better integrate the SimpleLogin service into ProtonMail, which should make it easier for ProtonMail users to use the SimpleLogin service. This enhanced integration becomes optional for them.

However, the two parties emphasize that SimpleLogin will remain a separate service and that current extensions and apps will continue to work as before. SimpleLogin therefore continues to work with other mail services. However, SimpleLogin can now use Proton’s ‘security technology infrastructure and capacity’, according to the two parties. For example, this should improve SimpleLogin’s uptime and allow it to work on new features faster. SimpleLogin writes to announce more about this ‘in the coming days’.

SimpleLogin is a browser extension and app that allows users to create anonymous email addresses when they sign up for a new service. This way, those services can be used without knowing the real email address of a user. For example, if an e-mail address leaks out or is sold on, that address can easily be disabled. SimpleLogin was founded in 2019 and is based in Paris.
