Porsche achieves a distance of 3425 km on circuit in 24 hours with electric Taycan can

Normally, Porsches are mostly about cornering performance, acceleration and top speed, but with the Taycan, other things are also important. A prototype of the electric car has covered a distance of 3425 km during a 24-hour endurance test.

The prototype has covered the distance without serious interruptions on the Italian high-speed track of Nardò; that is in fact a huge tarmac circle with a length of 12.6km. Porsche writes that only a few short stops have been applied for charging the battery and changing the drivers. 800V charging stations are used for charging.

A test like this is mainly intended to demonstrate the endurance performance of the battery in combination with a heat management system. The Taycan will have an 800V battery system. Porsche says this technology has helped the hybrid Porsche 919 to victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans three years in a row. This technology is now also applied in the Taycan. According to the manufacturer, it guarantees constant high performance, a limited loading time and a reduction in weight.

Porsche says its Taycan heat management system has proven itself by cooling and heating the high voltage components and preventing any power losses due to rising temperatures. This system also ensures an efficient charging process at a charging station. In principle, the charging capacity of a battery decreases as soon as it gets warm. With the Taycan, Porsche apparently manages to counteract that effect relatively well.

The combination of this battery technology and the system to prevent the battery from heating up has resulted in a distance of 3425 km. With this, the Taycan achieved an average of 142 km per hour including charging. An earlier, somewhat comparable endurance record was set by the Tesla Model 3 Long Range and came in at 2781km, although that was achieved on public roads and without that car’s full charging capacity.

The Taycan will be presented on September 4 and has, in addition to the 800V battery system, an electric powertrain designed to still have full power after several accelerations in quick succession. The car is expected to have a range of more than 400 km and the battery should be charged to eighty percent in fifteen minutes.
