Niantic is ending support for Android 4.4 KitKat with its games Pokémon Go and Ingress. From July 1, 2019, the games will only work on devices with Android 5 or newer. That should make further development of the games easier.

According to Niantic, the further development of the games will go better by stopping Android 4.4 support. Fewer resources are needed to continue to support the old Android version. The developer writes that on its support pages of Pokémon Go and Ingress.

Niantic also says that a large majority of users are now on Android 5 or newer. Figures from Google published in October 2018 show that 7.6 percent of Android devices run on Android 4.4 Kitkat. That Android version came out in 2013.

At the beginning of last year, Niantic stopped supporting iOS 10 with Pokémon Go. The developer did this because changes were made that were only possible with iOS version 11 and newer.
