Nintendo may use new LCD technology from Sharp. The Japanese manufacturer can produce LCDs in all kinds of shapes. Nintendo may be using such a display for a new handheld device that should replace the 3DS.

On the other hand, there are also other options, according to the Japanese news agency Kyodo. The medium relies on anonymous sources who claim that Nintendo can also use the screen for a device that maps a person’s sleeping behavior. At the end of October it became clear that the company is working on such functionality and that project would be part of the Quality of Life platform.

Sharp was set to put the screens into mass production in early 2016. Nintendo is reportedly the first customer and the company is rumored to be considering leaving a hole in the center of the screen. However, it is unclear what the purpose of such a design is. It is also unknown when the first products with the new LCDs will come on the market. Sharp announced its so-called free-form displays last summer.
