Nintendo: New NX console will be unique and different from Wii U
In an interview with Time, Nintendo’s president Tatsumi Kimishima takes a closer look at the NX. He points out that the system codenamed NX is different from the Wii and Wii U and that it is a ‘dedicated gaming platform’.
The NX has to become different and unique again. According to Kimishima, the console must be so different from the Wii and Wii U that the platform becomes attractive. The latter is difficult with the Wii U, says the CEO. Convincing consumers that the Wii U is different from the Wii is not an easy task, Kimishima says in the interview in Time.
Furthermore, the CEO did not reveal much about the NX and we have to wait until next year until more becomes clear. Rumors have been circulating about the NX for quite some time now. It would be a hybrid consisting of both a console and a mobile device with its own operating system.
Kimishima further elaborated on the ecosystem where Nintendo’s intellectual property resides. The goal of bringing all this together in hardware and software has not yet been fully achieved. For example, Miitomo, an app for smartphones and tablets, has been postponed until next March. Miitomo must use Mii figures and everything around them. Time’s reporter wonders if Western consumers will understand Miitomo. Kimishima thinks Nintendo will eventually succeed and that amiibos and all proprietary software will get more and more people on board, even in the overcrowded gaming market.
