Nintendo showcased the new capabilities of Super Mario Maker 2. The game features an expanded storyline, new items to build with, and special challenges, among other things. Super Mario Maker 2 comes out for Switch on June 28.

Nintendo showed the new possibilities of Super Mario Maker 2 in its Nintendo Direct livestream on Wednesday night. The game will include a more extensive storyline than its predecessor. After Princess Peach’s castle is destroyed, it’s up to Mario to fix things up by collecting coins. Coins are collected by completing levels and Nintendo has created over a hundred playing fields to showcase the editor’s capabilities.

The game is also full of new stuff and parts to create your own levels. The ramps, new enemies and greater variety of themes were previously presented by Nintendo. Now Super Mario Bros 3’s moon has also been added. As soon as the moon is touched, all enemies disappear from the screen. Depending on the theme, different things happen, for example goombas can float, haunted houses get dim lighting and sandstorms can arise in desert levels.

Special challenges have also been added to Super Mario Maker 2. For example, levels where you have to defeat a certain number of enemies, collect a certain number of coins or where you are not allowed to take damage. Levels can now scroll both vertically and horizontally.

New themes have also been added to the game. There is a snow, forest, sky and desert theme. Also, these themes have their own music composed by Koji Kondo, also known for the music of Super Mario Odyssey and the original Super Mario Maker. A number of new items have also been added such as new enemies, rocking platforms and slanted treadmills.

There will also be a new extra style to create levels in. In addition to the four existing styles, a Super Mario 3D World style will be added. This style includes exclusive enemies and bosses and has different abilities than the other styles.

Multiplayer has also been added to Super Mario Maker 2. Levels can be played together with up to four players. Modes such as Co-op and Race have also been made available. You can work on a level offline with two players.

Finally, there is an online hub where players using Nintendo Switch Online can search for levels. Players can also customize their Mii with hats and clothes. There is also an Endless Challenge, where players have to beat levels continuously until they get a game over screen. Super Mario Maker 2 comes out for Switch on June 28.
