Nikon has introduced the AF-S Nikkor 105mm f/1.4E ED. The bright portrait lens, which can be used in combination with Nikon’s FX DSLRs, will be available from August 25 for a suggested retail price of EUR 2,459.

A photo and information appeared online on Monday, Nikon has now officially announced the very bright 105 mm. The lens is 10.6 centimeters long, has a diameter of 9.5 cm and weighs 958 grams.

The optical design of the AF-S Nikkor 105mm f/1.4 consists of fourteen lens elements in nine groups. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of one meter. The diaphragm consists of nine blades and the filter size has a diameter of 82 mm.

According to Nikon, the 105 mm f/1.4 is particularly interesting for portrait photography. The combination of the relatively long focal length with the large aperture allows a very small depth of field. There are currently no other manufacturers that have a 105mm f/1.4 lens in their range. Almost all lens makers offer an 85mm f/1.4, but lenses with longer focal lengths from 100 to 135mm have a maximum aperture of f/2.0 in most cases. Canon does not make an 85 mm f/1.4, by the way, but has a brighter f/1.2 variant.
