Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said The Witcher series will be released on Netflix in the fourth quarter of this year.

Sarandos describes The Witcher as a “big new series” currently being filmed in Hungary. According to the CEO, the series will be released in the fourth quarter of 2019. He calls it a “huge European IP”, a “very popular game” and expects the series to do well worldwide as well. He did not provide more details, such as an exact release date. It was previously assumed that a release would not take place before 2020, but that now appears to be the case.

In any case, it is already known about the series that Superman actor Henry Cavill will play the lead role and will therefore take on the role of Geralt of Rivia. The series, which will be based on The Witcher, was announced in late 2017 and draws on the eight books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The series is not directly related to the games; CD Projekt Red’s games of the same name are also based on the books. The writer is involved in the production of the series.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had a good first quarter, welcoming nearly 10 million new paying customers. The streaming service has nearly 149 million subscribers worldwide.
