Netflix is testing Downloads For You to automatically bring in recommended content

Netflix has started testing a new feature called Downloads For You. When the feature is turned on, Netflix automatically downloads a number of recommended movies and episodes of series that the user has not yet seen during Wi-Fi connections.

Downloads For You, first noticed by AndroidPolice, is an extension of the Smart Downloads setting that Netflix introduced to its apps in July this year. This function ensures that a finished episode is removed, and that the next part is automatically downloaded.

Downloads For You goes one step further and also downloads material in the background that the user has not requested, but which suits his taste. The underlying idea is that Netflix subscribers always have something to watch, even when there is no or a very poor mobile data connection available.

Users control whether or not this recommended content is automatically downloaded via Netflix’s settings. They can also set how much storage space should be reserved for this. The default value is one gigabyte, which is roughly equivalent to four hours of viewing.

With the series and movies that the Netflix app downloads via Downloads For You, a short summary, info about the genre and some other data also appear. According to AndroidPolice, it is not entirely clear to which versions of the Netflix app the new function has already penetrated. In any case, the website found Downloads For You on two devices with the latest beta version of the Netflix app on Android, namely version 7.38.0 build 17 34627.
