It is no longer possible to make purchases with bitcoins in the Windows Store. Since the end of 2014, it was possible to add money to a Microsoft account with bitcoins. Why Microsoft is stopping bitcoins is not clear.

In a concise message, Microsoft writes that it is no longer possible to use bitcoins to top up the amount of money in a Microsoft account. Users who have done this before can continue to use the amount already in their account, but it is no longer possible to get this money back. The company has not disclosed why Microsoft will stop supporting bitcoin.

In December 2014, Microsoft introduced support for bitcoins. It was not possible to pay directly with the virtual currency, but users could add money to their account by paying with bitcoins. Microsoft collaborated with payment provider BitPay for this. It is unknown how many people used the service.

Update 23:00: Microsoft will not stop supporting bitcoin payments. This remains possible with US accounts. The notification on the website was an error, Microsoft says in a statement to Softpedia. The message in question has been removed from the website by Microsoft, but can still be viewed via Google’s cache.
