Microsoft and Canon have signed a patent deal. The two companies have agreed that they may use each other’s patents. This would mainly concern patents in the field of mobile technology and photography.

The two companies state that they have been working together for some time in product development for the consumer market and that it has now been decided to use each other’s patent portfolios with the agreement. However, Canon and Microsoft are not willing to give details about the patent deal, except that it would mainly concern patents related to mobile technology or photography.

Canon previously entered into a patent agreement with Microsoft when it licensed to use the exFat file system in 2009. In recent years, Microsoft has mainly been in the news in the field of Android in the field of patent deals. The group is trying to get parties that release Android and Chrome OS products to purchase licenses. That was the case with Nikon about Android cameras, among other things. Due to the many patent deals with Android manufacturers, it is suspected that Microsoft earns more from Google’s mobile operating system than its own Windows Phone. As far as we know, Canon does not work on cameras that run Android.
