Meta will lay off another ten thousand people this year, on top of the previously announced round of layoffs of eleven thousand people. CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he wants to flatten the company and wants to cancel projects with low priorities.

Except that about ten thousand people have to leave Meta, says Zuckerberg no longer have to fill five thousand vacancies. Managers are expected to announce reorganization plans in the coming months that will see the company structure become flatter, resulting in managers leaving the company. Now every manager has ‘some’ direct reports; ultimately there should be ten per manager. By the end of May, it should be clear to most employees whether they can stay or not.

Zuckerberg says this round of layoffs falls within Meta’s “efficiency year,” in which the company aims to improve financial performance “in a difficult environment.” Meta must become more ‘technical’ than it is now. The CEO says he wants to make his long-term vision possible with the round of dismissals. Zuckerberg wants Meta to focus, among other things, on AI and the metaverse, two projects that require a lot of financial investment, but do not immediately generate money.

This is Meta’s second major round of layoffs in more than four months. The first round was announced in November. Then the company announced that it would cut about thirteen percent of its jobs. This round of layoffs took place in the context of competition and disappointing advertising revenues. There were already rumors about this second round of dismissals last week.
