Logistics sector wants to ‘sign’ with NFC for package

From 2016 it should be possible to sign via nfc for the receipt of a package. An app is currently being developed for this purpose. PostNL, UPS and TNT, among others, are said to be interested in the system.

If the app is implemented by parcel delivery companies and other transport companies, users can sign for the receipt of a package by holding their phone against the delivery person’s device. To do this, they will have to install the corresponding app on their phone, which must also have NFC. The project, Transfollow, is being developed on behalf of three industry organizations from the logistics sector. They hope to save a lot of money if the paperwork and other cumbersome methods are phased out.

The service will go live next May, but initially Transfollow is targeting business users. From 2016, consumers should also be able to use the app. According to a Transfollow spokesperson, parcel deliverers UPS, PostNL and TNT, among others, have shown interest in the system. However, one company that supplies firewood is already experimenting when it is delivered to consumers.

Transfollow provides apps for Android and iOS, but also comes with an api. Suppliers of on-board computers for carriers can use these to make their systems suitable. If they do not have an NFC, exchange can also be done via a QR code or by typing a code. This is possible even if the on-board computer does not have an internet connection: keys are then created in advance and sent to users.
