LG says it is confident that it can solve the stuttering picture that users can experience when using their LG OLED TVs at 120Hz in conjunction with an RTX 30 video card and G-Sync.

LG has informed Forbes that it is confident that it can solve these problems with a firmware update, which should be ready before the end of the year. It is unknown when exactly that will be released and whether that will apply to the OLED TVs of 2020 and 2019.

It is a stuttering image at high frame rates when G-Sync is used in combination with an Nvidia RTX 30 video card. With this issue, the image lags very briefly and skips a few frames, essentially achieving the opposite of the smooth experience G-Sync is supposed to deliver.

These problems seem to be especially relevant at higher bandwidths. At the standard resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, 4: 2: 0 subsampling, 8bit color depth and 120Hz, according to users, there is no stuttering image, but that is the case when there is 10bit color depth. If 4: 4: 4 subsampling is used, there is a stuttering image at both 8bit and 10bit color depth when using G-Sync. On Twitter reports a user that the problems also play a role at lower bandwidths, such as at 1080p and 720p resolutions. According to him, only the use of 4: 2: 0 subsampling makes a positive difference

There were also two other issues before. For example, the G-Sync Compatible function on the RTX 3080 video card in combination with the OLED TVs can result in a black image at an output of 120Hz. An update has been released for this. In addition, users of LG’s OLED TVs from this year reported that it is not possible to get images in 4k at 120Hz with 4: 4: 4 display without compression. An update has also been released for this.
