LG Display is working with Mercedes-Benz to use OLED panels for dashboards. Mercedes-Benz plans to launch vehicles with the OLED panels in 2022. The recently announced Mbux system would still have LCDs.

An employee of LG Display announced the OLED collaboration between the Korean screen manufacturer and Mercedes-Benz to Business Korea. LG Display supplies all the OLED panels for the rear lights of Mercedes cars. The German car manufacturer showed a prototype on the exhibition floor of the CES.

Daimler announced its Mbux infotainment system for upcoming Mercedes models at CES last week. This system offers an optional dashboard with two 10.25″ screens with a resolution of 1920×720 pixels, one of which is a touchscreen.

Last year there were already reports in the Korean media that LG Display would supply OLED panels for this dashboard, but Business Korea now reports that the first Mercedes cars with OLEDs will not appear until 2022. Until now there would be no cars with OLED dashboards. The advantage of OLEDs lies in the better black display and the greater flexibility with regard to the shape of the screen.

Car manufacturers are increasingly going to co-develop screens for dashboards themselves. In the past, they would often have used standard tablet models. LG Display already supplies screens to Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia, among others.
